what is lolita fashion? what is egl?
lolita refers to a japanese subculture characterized by wearing mostly victorian-doll esque, frilly clothing. there's also EGL aka elegant gothic lolita, but both terms always overlap with each other so i don't think it really matters. there are three main categories: gothic, classic, and sweet. but there are many other categories derriving from the three such as grotesque, ero, hime, punk, etc. the subculture has been around since the 1980s and has continued onto the 2020s, although it is less popular than the boom in the 2000s to 2010s. lolita was a form of protest against japanese societal pressures to be "normal". some wore it to escape adult hood and embrace purity, while others wore it to escape into a fantasy world where they can freely shape their identity. nowadays, people wear lolita for fun.
of course, you would need to follow certain criteria for your coord...
- an innerwear petticoat. a-line or cupcake. the fluffier the better, but for casual outings, it doesnt need to be as fluffy. just achieve the bell silhouette.
- bloomers. this can be optional.
- a BLOUSE. but sometimes, the heat can be too much. blouseless coords are okay!
- JSK (jumperskirt) or OP (one piece)
- socks and shoes typically boots or heals. never sneakers.
- headdress, bows, or hats are good too. sometimes i see lolitas with a handbag or umbrella.
the rules aren't invincible. you can break some and still be lolita, but the main goal is to be cohesive and identifiable.
you can't just put on a bland walmart button up and wear that for your coord, you know?
